What is Google Analytics 4 (GA4)?

As a business owner, I know you understand the importance of a good web analytics tool. Which is why, you have been using Google Analytics 3 (GA3) to track your website’s performance, understand your visitors better, make data-driven decisions, and improve your customers’ shopping experience.

However, with changes in technology and consumer behaviour, GA3’s features and functionality are no longer sufficient. To address this, Google released its next generation analytics tool, GA4, in October 2020.

GA4 combines website and native app analytics into one product while providing powerful AI-driven insights to help you gain a deeper understanding of your customers and make better decisions to grow your business. It is free to use and by far the most advanced web analytics platforms on the market.

Difference between Universal Analytics (GA3) and Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

Sessions vs. Events

GA3’s measurement model is based on sessions and page views. While GA4’s measurement model is based on events and parameters.

Engagement Metrics

Engagement metrics in GA4 like engaged sessions, engagement rate, etc. are more accurate than GA3’s page views and bounce rate.

Default Reports & Interface

The default reports and reporting interface available in GA3 are very different from GA4. GA4 is more user centric.

Data Retention

The retention period for data sent and associated with cookies, user identifiers, or advertising identifiers in GA4 is max 14 months. Less than what was available in GA3.

Exploration Reports

GA4 property has a new reporting view called “Explorations”. They allow for advanced analysis with more options to analyse user engagement and behaviour.

Debug View

GA4 provides a Debug View to view and analyse the incoming data in your GA4 property. It has 5 sections including top events and device used.

Reasons for eCommerce businesses to Migrate from GA3 to GA4

Continue Tracking

GA3 will no longer process data beginning Jul23 (for Standard accounts) and Oct23 (for Analytics 360 accounts).

Collect Historical Data

Implement GA4 asap to capture data for MoM and YoY comparison reports. Historical GA3 data will not be useful.

Leverage New Features

GA4 offers some fantastic features, like a single product for website and native app analytics, exploration reports, and more.

Gain Familiarity

Your team will need some time to get familiar with GA4’s new metrics, reports, and interfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions around GA4

When is the confirmed Universal Analytics cutoff date?

Universal Analytics (UA) tracking will stop in July 2023 for those using the free version, and October 2023 for GA360 customers.

Can I migrate to GA4 and still access historic Universal Analytics data?

Historic data will remain, but not forever. There is no official date for this, but legacy data must be exported out of UA properties.

Can I automate the data exporting process from Universal Analytics?

As the team explores ways to streamline exports, it’s worth pointing out that features such as BigQuery solutions are necessary.

Will GA4 data match legacy Universal Analytics data?

Not all metrics will match between the old reports and the new ones. While looking into the new reports, sessions may be the most impacted.

How Should Companies Migrate and Implement GA4?

• We recommend Google Tag Manager for implementation. There will likely be many situations where the triggers that fire tags from Universal Analytics can be reused.
• If you’re not using the data layer, this is also a chance to design one with your web team. With this best-practice addition, more opportunities expanded and customized data can be part of the migration process as well.
